The terribly inconsistent Winterbottom’s best film so far, based on the factual book by Mariane Pearl chronicling Pakistani and American attempts to locate her kidnapped journalist husband in Karachi, is an intimate, briskly paced, naturalistic, suspenseful, beautifully performed (Irfan Khan, in particular, is excellent), and ultimately devastatingly moving minor-masterpiece that explores the stories behind the headlines.
