Ulmer’s bleak noir – chronicling the misadventures that befall a nightclub pianist as he hitchhikes from New York to Los Angeles in search of love, encompassing death, happenstance, coincidence, and a sexily deranged femme fatale – is a short and sour little film, filled with expressionistic visual delights, which stands up well to various different readings.
