Keaton’s most renowned film – a non-stop, action-packed civil war pic, following a young Confederate train driver’s attempts to rescue the two loves of his life, his beloved engine and his potential fiancée, after they have been kidnapped by Yankee spies – although often spectacular and generally very funny and entertaining, lacks the heart and humanity of his best work, and feels somewhat soulless in comparison.
