Taking the deaths of 23 Chinese cockle pickers at Morecambe Bay in February 2004 as its genesis, this sensitive examination of illegal immigration, modern slavery, and human exploitation – documentarian Broomfield’s first feature film – is a harrowing and eye-opening work that is guaranteed to provoke strong emotions in all those that view it. N.B. I would advise those watching this film on DVD to watch the excellent making of first. It contains no real spoilers, and its background information on the non professional cast, and its insights into Broomfield’s working methods give the feature added resonance and poignancy.
