But for an inspired sequence in which Hay, Marriott, and Moffatt’s corrupt and incompetent firemen attempt to erect a shiny, brand spanking new pole, and in the process bring the entire town to a halt, this uncharacteristically unsophisticated, slapstick comedy, a pale imitation of Ask a Policeman (1939) and Oh, Mr. Porter!
