Vidor’s arrestingly photographed and oft brilliant if occasionally vaguely camp though never less than thoroughly entertaining film follows the ups and downs of Zeke, a cotton farmer in the deep south with an eye for the ladies who, after accidentally killing his brother when cheated out of a year’s income by a pair of confidence tricksters, becomes a preacher, and takes to the rails to spread the word of god; but, unfortunately for all concerned, the devil is not yet done with him.
