With an affectingly nuanced performance from Anderson and a beautifully refined aesthetic, Davies’s elegant adaptation of Wharton’s bitingly satirical tragedy follows the fall from grace of a New York society lady at the beginning of the twentieth century – a fall brought about as much by her virtues as her vices, as her friends’ hypocrisies gradually and decidedly take their toll.
